Our commitments

Honesty and integrity

Councillors take an oath of office to always act in the public interest with honesty, integrity and transparency.

Strathfield Labor commits to being loyal to this oath by:

  • actively participating and engaging with Strathfield Council’s governance committees

  • supporting the local economy, small businesses and the community with COVID recovery initiatives.

  • supporting a ban on real estate agents and property developers serving on council

  • directing the affairs of Council in accordance with relevant directions and legislation

  • monitoring Council’s financial performance, its service delivery and allocation of resources

Fighting overdevelopment

The NSW planning system is already skewed towards developers. Councillors need to be an important independent voice against inappropriate commercial and property developments. Strathfield Labor commits to always acting in the public interest. We commit to:

  • endorsing a new Local Environment Plan and Development Control Plan which improves planning and development in the Strathfield Local Government Area

  • fighting the Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment (Infrastructure Contributions) Bill which will see local developer contributions go to NSW general revenue rather than return to our community

  • saving Homebush Village from any rezoning which would ruin its character and heritage

  • lobbying NSW government to introduce measures to improve building quality, reduce defects and protect consumers

  • introducing sustainability and environmental principles for new high rise building

  • lobbying to ban inappropriate commercial developments such as boarding houses in low density areas

  • protecting Strathfield’s low density areas from the NSW Governments Medium Density Code

  • introducing a Vacancy Levy on empty dwellings

  • committing to inclusive zoning and ensure that developers contribute to affordable and social housing

  • opposing to the Lend Lease planning proposal at the Strathfield Town Centre. We do not believe this is in the public interest or will deliver any public benefit to our community

  • fighting against the inappropriate overdevelopment of 23 Water Street, Strathfield South

  • removing the conservation order adjacent to the 24/7 Parramatta Road Logistics centre near Welfare Street and Flemington Road

Building our community

Strathfield Labor commits to following the principles of social justice and equity whilst performing our councillor duties by:

  • support our local community to cope with the impact of the changing COVID environment

  • encouraging council to consult with the community and communicate council initiatives and priorities

  • making community spaces affordable and accessible for community use

  • encouraging night life activities, for example bars, restaurants and social hubs

  • building more recreational infrastructure for our youth, including skate parks, netball, basketball and volleyball courts

  • working to establish a women’s domestic violence shelter in the Strathfield LGA

  • ensuring public services remain public, eg. save not-for-profit childcare services from privatisation

  • reduction of speeding and "hooning cars" in Strathfield LGA

Environment and heritage

  • Establish a Strathfield Bike Plan that links to paths between the Cooks River and Ismay Reserve, the Strathfield Town Centre and local villages

  • Transition council’s fleet to electric vehicles

  • Introduce food waste recycling and more circular economy options
